For many years California had a banana farm called the "Pacific Coast Banana Plantation" located at La Carmencita in Ventura Country. They used both printed homemade labels and hand lettered labels on an amazing variety of bananas, including many types you would never see for sale in the U.S. Sadly, when the majors like Dole and Chiquita started widely importing speciality bananas, like baby bananas, apple bananas, and red bananas, they put a crimp in sales and the farm closed down, after more than a decade of operation. These while crude are among the rarest banana labels to be had!
